 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija'peres (April 16, 1971 - - March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. Selena is among the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was inspired by Latin music and Latin albums. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. Her clothing choices are what brought her the title "Tejano Madonna" by media outlets. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. She was often criticised in the 1980s , and was barred from bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a predominantly male-dominated genre. Her popularity grew when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She won it nine times. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989. The album, titled self-titled, was released the following year. Her brother became her primary music producer as well as writer. Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums Chart for eight months in a row. The album's popularity in the marketplace was praised by music critics as making it the "breakthrough" album of her career. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles, became her most adored signature song. Live! (1993) was awarded Best Mexican/American album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to do so. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of the most popular Latin albums. It was praised by critics as the first Tejano music album that was commercially viable, and it quickly became one the most sought-after Latin subgenres of Latin music of the time.
